Beethoven: The String Quartets [Hybrid SACD] [Box Set]

Beethoven: The String Quartets [Hybrid SACD] [Box Set]

It's hard to know what to say about the Prazak Quartet's cycle of the complete string quartets of Beethoven. Recorded between 1999 and 2003, they do sound lovely: warm, fresh, close, and vivid. And played by what is surely one of the finest of contemporary Czech quartets, they are delightfully performed: clean, clear, light, and lucid. But what is it about the Prazak's approach to Beethoven that makes them worth seeking out? The ensemble is tight but relaxed. The tone is strong but sweet. The tempos are neither too fast nor too slow. The interpretations are enthusiastic but balanced. Everything is where it's supposed to be doing what it's supposed to do but nothing really registers - not the radiant beauty of the opening Allegro from the D major Quartet, Op. 18/3, nor the passionate expressivity of the closing Adagio from the B flat major Quartet, Op. 18/6; not the enormous potency of the closing Theme russe from the F major Quartet, Op. 59/1, nor the immense mystery of the central Molto adagio from the E minor Quartet, Op. 59/2; not the unfathomable profundity of the "Heiliger Dankgesang" from the A minor Quartet, Op. 132, nor the intimate humanity of the Cavatina from the B flat major Quartet, Op. 130. Fans of earlier recorded cycles of Beethoven's quartets performed by the Czech Smetana or Talich quartets may want to hear what a later Czech group does with the music - but many, perhaps most, other people won't. ~ James Leonard, Rovi

Live 1973-2007 (Remastered) (Box) - CD

Live 1973-2007 (Remastered) (Box) - CD

The last in a series of four deluxe box sets reissuing the entirety of Genesis' catalog, Live 1973-2007 contains four of the group's five live albums - 1973's Live, 1977's Seconds Out, 1982's Three Sides Live, and both volumes of 1992's Genesis Live: The Way We Walk, sequencing the two into concert order - adding an empty slot for 2007's Live Over Europe, which was not included in this set. As a reflection of the shifting times, Live 1973-2007 doesn't have as many high-resolution audio options as the previous box sets, with only Live, Seconds Out, and Live at the Rainbow 1973 - the latter a bonus in the form of the first official release of an early live concert that has been heavily bootlegged and excerpted on previous Genesis archival releases - presented in DVDs with 5.1 Surround Sound (Three Sides Live and The Way We Walk are just CDs). Apart from this notable exception, this box maintains the high quality of the rest of the series right down to that excellent bonus disc from the Rainbow. While there isn't as much video material as the previous three box sets and some will (justifiably) bristle at the lack of 5.1 mixes, this nevertheless remains a fine conclusion to this excellent reissue series. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi

Mozart Edition: Complete Works [Includes DVD + CD-ROM]

Mozart Edition: Complete Works [Includes DVD + CD-ROM]

Here's something for the ultimate Mozart aficionado: Brilliant's box set of 170 discs containing the complete works of Mozart. Brilliant released a similar box in 2006 for the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth, including a CD-ROM containing full liner notes. This 2010 set has a few different performances and an additional DVD with interactive features detailing Mozart's life. The 2,400+ tracks give you complete performances of Mozart's music, from the keyboard pieces written by the 5-year-old prodigy to the late works of his short life, such as the profound Requiem and the awe-inspiring Symphony No. 41, providing you with days upon days of listening. The artists may not be the best-known, but they are generally well-respected by those who do recognize them. The quality of their performances is relatively high, and in most instances, the entire set of a particular type of work is performed by only one or two soloists or ensembles, so there is consistency through the genres. The symphonies are by the Mozart-Ensemble Amsterdam and conductor Jaap ter Linden; Pieter-Jan Belder and Derek Han are the soloists in the piano concertos; Salvatore Accardo performs the violin sonatas; and the choral music is conducted by Nicol Matt. Other artists include Sigiswald Kuijken and La Petite Bande; Charles Mackerras and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra; and Soile Isokoski, Sandrine Piau, Marc Grauwels, and Peter-Lukas Graf are some of the vocal and instrumental soloists. This is a budget-priced alternative to the Philips Complete Mozart Edition. ~ Patsy Morita, Rovi
